Millie Mae Speaks Up To a Bully Today, by Roxann Biesack, is a short children's story about Millie Mae, who is the victim of a school bully, who is very upset and confused about what do about this situation. She confides to her secret friend, Squeaky, a frog, who listens and then coaches her on how to deal with the matter. Simple as this story may seem, it carries a powerful message, showing that bullies, at whatever age, not just childhood bullies, can be exposed by throwing the spotlight on them and showing them for what they are. Moreover, that bullies are the product of their own environment and familial scene - showing us that compassion and understanding for their situation is part of the formula for resolving the matter. It's a cool story, and even as an adult, it resonated with me because of my own past. I would recommend this book to anyone - and certainly for children who will probably cross paths with a bully at some point in their lives.

I was so happy to see the above review on my book. Real Laplaine commented that the story about bullying and the tools shared and lessons learned, resonated with him from his childhood. Since giving book presentations, I was surprised how many grownups, even senior citizens have singled me out to talk. They confide how they were bullied so many years ago, as a child. I am always saddened to hear them talk about it as if it happened just days ago. The self doubt and pain can stay a life time. But we can learn to love ourselves. Remember the bullies in our lives were taking out their own pain on the first vulnerable person around.

The good news is we can help our kiddos before they become a target. Many parents have shared with me that once they read this story to their children, it had prompted discussions. Some have seen friends being bullied. Others have confided that they had been bullied. Understand, most kids do not share this because they feel some shame and confusion. Once they start talking about it, they can learn the tools to speak up for themselves. They don't have to carry with them for a lifetime like these grownups I mentioned, have done!
