I don't want to talk about it!

                                                        BOOK PRESENTATION

Talking can be the best medicine, especially when your spirit is bruised. But often when children are

being bullied, they become quiet and sullen. It is common for them to believe it is their fault. They are

embarrassed and ashamed. Why would they want to share their shame with anyone. So, alone, children

will internalize it and bear the burden on their innocent shoulders. These little ones believe what they are

told. Their unsophisticated and young minds can completely embrace the message the bully is giving

them. Remember, I have talked about what happens at many of my book signings? Older women and

men have come up to me and confided that when they were very little they were bullied. I can see they

are remembering it like it was just yesterday. They tell me they wish they had a book like mine to help

them understand how to stand up to a bully. They tell me how it affected their confidence and changed

their choices in life. They still hear the echoes of the negative messages and feel the bruises of being

bullied.

It is easier give a child the tools to speak up for themselves before they become a target. But life

is not perfect, is it. If you think your child exhibits the signs of being bullied, or if someone tells you

they have seen your child being bullied at school or on the school bus or in the neighborhood, there

are ways to help. Keep talking...not about what you suspect or know, but about anything. Talk

about fun things. Ask questions about their day, like, "what was the funniest thing that happened

today", or "What did you learn", or "Who did you play with". Anything to get them talking. Read

books to them and then talk about the story. Gradually introduce my book, "Millie Mae Speaks Up

To A Bully Today", to them. After reading my book to their children, many parents have told me that

the story had inspired interesting conversations with. Some children spoke of being bullied

and their parents were completely unaware of it. This opened a door to very healing conversations.
